In his third annual reissue round-up, Egon discusses five of 2011’s essential reissues at NPR. This year, the focus is on redefining “psychedelic rock,” and includes entries by five record companies – Numero Group, Mr. Bongo, Light In The Attic, Faded Sunshine and Shadoks Music – sympathetic to Now-Again’s cause: finding the nexus between the best of 60s and 70s psych-rock and funk. Plug in, listen and, above all, try to support those imprints boldly going where no-one has gone before.

As a bonus to you, the visitor to Now-Again’s site, we’re offering a free download of WITCH’s “Toloka,” which Egon references in his piece but wasn’t included in NPR’s playlist. This song will be included on the WITCH 4 CD/6LP box set We Intend To Cause Havoc!, due out in May 2012.

This year, we present something a bit harder-edged, in keeping with the garage-psych tradition of the Ngozi Family’s early recordings. “Jesus Christ” is from Ngozi’s The Ghetto, an album that we’ve recently reissued in conjunction with Shadoks Music. If you’re a follower of the music we reissue, this should be a perfect Christmas carol.

This investigation into Houston jazz drummer, educator and label owner Bubbha Thomas’ Summer Jazz Workshop – and the nearly impossible to source 45s released by the high school students that participated in the program in the early 70s – colors the Kashmere Stage Band experience and helps explain just how this one Texas city managed to release so much damn-good adolescent funk music.

We’re sad to announce the passing of the mythic Brazilian singer, songwriter, guitarist, artist and visionary Luis Augusto Martins Côrtes. Côrtes died today after a long fought battle with throat cancer. He was 61 years old.

Best known by his nom de plume Lula Côrtes, he was one of the driving forces behind the late 60s to late 70s psychedelic rock scene in Recife and the artistic godfather of the likes of Nação Zumbi and, by extension, our own Seu Jorge and Almaz. The albums he produced and recorded – from the dueling guitars of Satwa to Marconi Notaro’s groundbreaking No Sub Reino dos Metazoários to his own Rosa de Sangue – put forth a revolutionary bent with a striking originality during Brazil’s military dictatorship. That his albums were almost all self-released (many on Solar, the imprint he helped found) only furthered his legend.

If Côrtes is to be remembered by one masterpiece, it should be Paebiru, recorded and released with Zé Ramalho in 1975. This white whale of a record – a double LP encapsulating a book within its gatefold – took Brazilian psychedelic rock to its zenith. Stunning and timeless, Paebiru will help help keep Côrtes’ memory alive for years to come. With that in mind, we present one song – “Raga dos Raios” (“Raga of the Rays”) – below.

In 2008, the photographer B+ put us in touch with Côrtes, and we were able to purchase some of his original artwork and strike up a conversation with him about Paebiru and his artistic trajectory. A humble, spiritual and perplexing man, Côrtes wrote us:

“Acho que o objetivo primordial de todo artista é fazer com que sua obra fale por si mesma, dessa forma a pessoa que existe em cada um transparece e se dá a conhecer.”
/
“I think that the primordial objective of every artist is to make it so that his work speaks for itself, so that the person that exists within him transpires to come out so that we know him.”

With that said, we can say that we hope that we know Lula Côrtes.

Last year, we shared a special New Year’s carol from South Korean psych-legends He 5. This year, we’re digging a bit deeper and offering you a rather bizarre single by Zambian guitarist, singer and songwriter Paul Ngozi. This song, the b-side to his “Happy Christmas” single, is a departure from the hard-edged garage-psych of the Ngozi Family’s early recordings – but it’s the perfect companion for your New Year’s revelry. Sorry about the crackle – imagine it’s the bubbles popping in your champagne flute!

In the meantime, we (re)discovered this incredible James Brown cover by True Soul star Thomas East – issued in the early 80s on the True Soul subsidiary ARTX. And, well, we couldn’t help but make it available for y’all this holiday season. Merry Christmas from all of us at Now-Again!

Egon’s latest entry to his Funk Archaeology series at NPR sheds some light on his forthcoming anthology Those Shocking Shaking Days: Indonesia Hard, Psychedelic, Progressive Rock and Funk 1970-1978. Indonesia’s various 70s scenes were dense, but often times underground; this piece sheds light on not only the process he and fellow record collectors and archivists Jason Connoy and Chandra Drews had to go through in the discovery process, but also on a forthcoming (hopefully?) Madlib/Indonesian collaboration, of sorts, for the discussed, but not-yet-realized, Supreme Team project.
