Various: 1st Annual Inner-City Talent Expo (March 26, 1972 Columbus Ohio – RIP Gil Scott-Heron)

We mentioned this uncharted funk and soul album – a live talent show, recorded and released in small quantities in 1972 – in a previous “Pick.” Now we have a sad reason to post this, The Brother’s Rap cover of the late Gil Scott-Heron’s “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised.” This rendition – performed by an unheralded band, and released almost concurrently with the legendary version that, as my wife said, “if you’re alive, you know and love” – is one of the earliest examples of Scott-Heron’s influence, and a fitting tribute to the fallen poet, author, singer and self-proclaimed “bluesologist.”

Thanks to Nathan Bosshard for sharing this tune, and image, with us so we could share it with you.

Finally! Celebrating “Psych Funk Sa-Re-Ga!” at Palate Food + Wine

Finally! A month (or more!) after we had to postpone this party, we’re back on line. The date – not to be missed – is May 22nd. We’re getting our records ready now…

We’re teaming up with our friends at World Psychedelic Funk Classics and palate food + wine to throw another in a long line of free listening parties, this time for the Psych Funk Sa-Re-Ga! anthology. Well, let’s clarify: entry is free, the sounds are free; you have to buy your own vino and food… We’ll be playing Indian psychedelia and funk all afternoon (and probably evening) and the palate folks – added again to Pulitzer Prize winning food critic Jonathan Gold’s “99 Essential LA Restaurants” list in the LA Weekly – will be dishing out some Indian street cuisine.

In case you missed out on our Sunday funk-fests before:
