From The Archive: Egon Celebrates A Birthday With Baris, 2006 (now with mp3).

(Matt Rowland wrote and posted this piece on Now-Again’s old website three years ago. We dug it out and updated it with an mp3 download of one of Manco’s funkiest tracks.)

LOS ANGELES, CA – JULY 12, 2006: The heroic image of Turkish psychedelic rock icon Baris Manço adorned the birthday cake of Now-Again Records CEO, Eothen “Egon” Alapatt, last Wednesday during an impromptu celebration. Revellers gathered at Alapatt’s Glassell Park residence to commemorate his 28th year on this funky planet.

The Manço-adorned dessert provided the evening’s highlight. A treat for the eyes as well as the palate, the frosted rendition of Turkey’s beloved singer provided a tasty way for the half-dozen partygoers in attendance to enjoy a lesson in flavor from the other side of the globe. MORE

Announcing: Lloyd Miller and The Heliocentrics (and a free mp3!)

A while ago, we posted a back and forth that we had with Dr. Lloyd Miller about the past, future and ethics of rhythm. Well, now we have something better – his collaborative album with The Heliocentrics is set for release on Strut on August 2nd (well, the actual vinyl will come out on August 31st).

It’s a monster of an album, inspired by Millers’ frequent tours and ceaseless study of Middle Eastern music and culture, full of the rock solid rhythms that the Heliocentrics are known for and blessed by Miller’s genius on an array of instruments that would cause even the most talented of jazzers to pause. Download an example now – one that’s much funkier than anything we would have expected Miller to allow, but one that speaks volumes to his – and The Heliocentrics – talents.

A Free Cali-Funk Download: Chucky Thurmon “Turn It Over (Miles’ Drum and Bass Edit)”

Over the years, we’ve come to know Breakestra bassist, sometimes drummer and bandleader Miles Tackett as the funk doctor: he takes exquisite funk songs that suffered from a recording difficulty or two and breathes life into them anew. His most recent surgery – “Turn It Over” by rapper E-40’s uncle, Chucky Thurmon ( from our recently issued California Funk anthology). Below, you can download Miles’ repaired version of the song – featuring his own drums and bass. Very funky, of course, through and through.
