Stream: Seu Jorge and Almaz Album Preview at NPR – “The Melancholy Musical Voyager…”

You can now read a glowing review and check out Seu Jorge and Almaz in its entirety via NPR before the album is released next Tuesday. An excerpt from NPR’s review:

Seu Jorge and Almaz mostly consists of cover songs, which in any other artist’s hands could be a recipe for disaster or mediocrity — but, boy, can Seu Jorge pull off a good cover song. He manages the perfect balance between adding his own distinct style and keeping the essence of the original. The results are portraits of complex emotions, such as his take on Kraftwerk’s “The Model.” With Jorge’s raw vocals and an Old West guitar that feels like a distant memory, the song becomes a strange cocktail of lust and sadness — not an uncommon feeling, but not commonly discussed in rock ‘n’ roll, either.”

Discovered – Photos of Carleen and The Groovers

We’ve been looking for photos of drummer Carleen Jean Butler since Egon offered the first official reissue of Carleen and The Groover’s monstrous funk anthem “Can We Rap” on The Funky 16 Corners anthology a decade ago. In the interim, we released a vinyl anthology that contained the band’s four known recordings, compiled “The Thing” on Cold Heat, and even tracked down Carleen’s first drum teacher in search of some documentation that this woman actually existed!

And now, nearly forty years after he first received these promo shots in the mail, an East Coast club owner made these two photos available for sale. They now reside in the collection of producer and funk enthusiast DJ Shadow. And they prove that Carleen did indeed play a double kick-drum – better than the rest of ’em. Take that Lars Ulrich!
