This Weekend in L.A.: Our official “Dark Sunrise” Record Release Party at Palate Food + Wine

We’re throwing another free event to celebrate the release of our Dark Sunrise anthology. Well, let’s clarify: entry is free, the sounds are free; you have to buy your own vino and food… We’ll be playing Zamrock all afternoon (and probably evening) and the Palate folks – added again to Pulitzer Prize winning food critic Jonathan Gold’s “99 Essential LA Restaurants” list in the LA Weekly – will be dishing out some Zambian staples.

In case you missed out on our Sunday best(es) before:

A Zamrock Primer – and more: Egon on RBMA Radio

You probably missed Egon’s Fireside Chat on RBMA Radio earlier this year. Recorded while Egon (seen above with the BBC’s Benji B) moderated at the 2010 Red Bull Music Academy in London, this set offers an excellent introduction to our Dark Sunrise anthology, gives a larger overview of Zambia’s Zamrock scene, and also offers a sneak peak at our forthcoming anthologies that dig into Indonesian prog, Iranian psychedelia, Nigerian fuzz-funk, beat-heavy American ballads, and gives an inside look into the process of working with the likes of Madlib and Oh No on albums like Beat Konducta in Africa and Ethiopium.

Rappcats is now offering an exclusive pre-sale of this anthology; it is out everywhere good music is sold on 11.23.10.

Buy: Rikki Ililonga and Musi-O-Tunya Dark Sunrise on 3LP, 2CD and Digital at Rappcats

“Dark Sunrise” Pre-Sale (And Grab A Free MP3!)…

Following our reissue of three essential albums (WITCH’s Introduction and Lazy Bones and Amanaz’s Africa) from the genre, we finally present our Dark Sunrise, an anthology of Zambian “Zamrock” godfather Rikki Ililonga and his groundbreaking band Musi-O-Tunya.

The anthology surveys Musi-O-Tunya’s rarely heard 7″ singles – not just the first psychedelic rock music, but the first pop music independently released in Zambia – their debut album Wings of Africa and follows Ililonga’s solo career in its first stages, with his Zambia and Sunshine Love albums.
