Psych Funk 101 Full Page Review In The Wire

We think it’s a first for us here at Now-Again; it’s certainly a first for our cousins at World Psychedelic Funk Classics Records. A full page, glowing review of the Psych Funk 101 Comp in The Wire Magazine by Peter Shapiro.

An excerpt:

“I have said it many times before, but I will say it again: there is no more exciting sound in music than the sound of a guitarist barely familiar with electric amplification – or, as evidenced on this fabulous compilation of syncretic out-there funk, a saz player trying to come to terms with a fuzzbox.”

Mr. Chop Talks DOOM, Pete Rock, Future Of Fuzz Funk In Hiphopdx Interview

Mr. Chop’s Pete Rock inspired For Pete’s Sake is out now. The man himself explains it’s genesis in this interview with Hiphopdx.com

” Throughout the album, released on November 3, Mr. Chop freaks some Funk of his own with a series of intermezzos. Asked about their genesis, the producer and engineer revealed, “The interludes on For Pete’s Sake are ideas I wanted to throw in there to break up Pete’s instrumentals and help the album flow as a whole. They weren’t intially intended from the start, but after I finished the Pete Rock tracks, it became apparent that something was missing. I had a few ideas, sketches of my own that I made while editing the tracks had become tiresome. I usually do that while working on a edit, something else mutates and I’ll have to side track for a while and capture a potential new piece. This was the beginning of what became seven intermezzos. ‘Intermezzo 3’ was the first idea that bore fruit, I think they create nice little breathing spaces and perhaps the listener who is familiar with the original works of Pete Rock & CL Smooth, can do a little reminiscing of their own.” ”

Announcing: Savath & Savalas The Predicate Dub Version

We really enjoyed an album we released earlier this year with Stones Throw – Savath and Savalas’s La Llama. It served as an excellent summer soundtrack, with Eva Puyelo Muns’ breathy vocals sliding around casual melodies and caressing rough hewn beats crafted by Prefuse 73 and Roberto Carlos Lange. Well, summer’s gone, fall is upon us and winter will be here soon. So this new entry into the Savath and Savalas book – etched by a new production entity we know only as “The Predicate” (Prefuse knows all types) – fits perfectly.

Who woulda thunk it – “Catalan-folk-psych with minimalist-electronic-sensibilities” re-imagined as an excursion in neo-dub? Not us, but La Llama: The Semi Dub Porn Version eases us into autumn with a just enough bounce to remind us of the warm days past.

It will be up as a digital album this week Stones Throw’s webstore. We’ll be releasing part two of Roberto’s “Oscuro Como Boca De Lobo” podcast at the same time. Stay tuned.
