Found: Kashmere Stage Band Sheet Music/Download: Kashmere Stage Band “Super Bad”

As the Kashmere Stage Band documentary Thundersoul continues to make the festival rounds, we here at Now-Again get a bit more serious about the idea that record collector and indie-distribution kingpin Joe Mansfield have been discussing for a while now: the definitive Kashmere Stage Band eight-LP box set. That day might come soon…. take a look at the sheet music that Mansfield dug out of his collection yesterday, above.

Yes, at one point in the distant past, any high school student in the nation could attempt to recreate the magical funk that the high school students at Kashmere Senior High School played under the direction of Conrad O. Johnson. An example is below.

Photos: Kashmere Stage Band Live In L.A. at John Ford Ampitheater

In a previous post, we told you that the screening of Snoot Films’ Kashmere Stage Band documentary Thundersoul – along with a performance from the 1974 Kashmere Stage Band – was not to be missed. Well, if you missed last night’s performance, these photos will barely do justice. Nor these reviews, which were texted to me following the show:

“AMAZING AND INSPIRING SHOW!” – MRR (MRR&ADM)
“So stoked to have been a part of that!” – The Gaslamp Killer
“That was life affirming, I’m going to be smiling about that tonight for years.” – Marc Kets, Associate Dean, Idyllwild Arts Academy.

The doc won the L.A. Film Festival’s Audience Award – its second (after winning the Audience Award at SXSW’s Film Festival earlier this year.). A theatrical release is in the works.

Kashmere Stage Band in the L.A. Times: “revisiting the ‘Soul’ of a remarkable high school jazz band…”

In yesterday’s L.A. Times, writer Mark Olsen discussed the Kashmere Stage Band documentary Thunder Soul and its genesis with our Texas Thundersoul anthology.

Excerpts from the piece:

” “Thunder Soul,” directed by Mark Landsman, tells the story of the student band from Kashmere High School…Landsman was listening to NPR in 2006 when he first heard about Johnson and the Kashmere Stage Band. Knocked out by the music he heard, and incredulous that it was played by high school kids some 30 years previous, he looked up every Conrad Johnson he could in the Houston area… It was Alapatt’s compilation that was featured on the NPR piece heard by Landsman. Landsman’s initial impulse after visiting Johnson was to pursue a fictional feature based on his story. Once Landsman heard rumblings that Kashmere alumni were talking about playing together again, he switched to making a documentary and was there to capture the very first rehearsals for the reunion…”
