Photos/Audio: Zamrock Rehearsals – Jagari Chanda, Rikki Ililonga, Karl Hector & The Malcouns (Free MP3 Downloads!)

Late last year we mentioned that WITCH’s Emmanuel “Jagari” Chanda and Musi-O-Tunya founder Rikki Ililonga were readying to journey from Lusaka to Rennes to perform Zamrock live with Karl HEctor & The Malcouns at France’s Transmusicales Festival. Well the show went off – and it went off well. So well, in fact, that Jagari and Rikki are again traveling to France to perform at Espace Fraternite – Magic Mirror (Aubervilliers) – again with Karl Hector and crew.

So we’re showing you some rehearsal photos, shot by Denis Pernath at the Hector rehearsal space in Munich, and offering two downloads from the Transmusicales Festival below.

Zamrock at Transmusicales Festival/Rennes, France

As detailed in yesterday’s issue of Le Monde (“Can You Dance The Zamrock” by Stephanie Binet), WITCH’s “Jagari” Chanda and Rikki Ililonga are on their way to Rennes, France to perform an exclusive set of their Zamrock classics at Jean-Louis Brossard’s Transmuicales Festival. They will be backed by Karl Hector & The Malcouns. This is the first Zamrock performance outside of Zambia in over thirty-five years.

Above and below you can see some images shot by South African filmmaker Calum MacNaughton, who was with Chanda and Ililonga filming scenes for a forthcoming Zamrock documentary when he snapped these shots of the duo in rehearsal. More photos to come soon.

A special thanks to Ludivine Gretere for making this event possible.

Zamrock Aplenty In 2013

Followers of this label’s releases know Jason “Moss” Connoy as the collector and enthusiast whose investigations – and amazing record archive – lead to our Those Shocking Shaking Days anthology and who recently issued two essential companion pieces to that compilation: his AKA album and Benny Soebardja’s The Lizard Years.

He’s also the intrepid type who will just show up in Lusaka, Zambia, with nothing but Canadian dollars and an insurmountable desire to discover…. and come home rarities like the first press of WITCH’s Introduction, pictured below. This record is so rare that a photo of it wasn’t even included in our We Intend To Cause Havoc! anthology.

Moss also came back with a series of records which will figure into our forthcoming Ngozi Family anthology, our follow up to Rikki Ililonga and Musi-O-Tunya’s Dark Sunrise (Musi-O-Tunya’s second, excellent album Give Love To Your Children) and our overall anthology of the Zamrock scene: all three albums are slated for 2013 releases.

Exclusive! Now-Again X Hit & Run – hand silkscreened Chrissy Zebby Tembo tee shirts.

We’re STILL in the process of building out our new webstore (at least we can now say we’re somewhere in the middle of phase two), but every once in a while we just have to present you with an opportunity to grab something exclusive. Well, the fine folks over at Hit & Run hit us up with a great looking, hand silkscreened tee shirt based off the artwork for the Zamrock Chrissy Zebby Tembo classic My Ancestors album. We wanted some for ourselves – who wouldn’t want to rep the legendary Ngozi Family drummer in the dog days of L.A.’s Indian Summer? – so we decided to make a small run in both black and fuschia. They’re printed on high quality American Apparel combed cotton tees and are comfy, trust.

We only have a small amount of these shirts available and we’re making them available, on a first come first serve basis. Price is $25 plus shipping (we only offer first class United States Postal Service). If you want in, here’s what to do:

1.email us with subject line CHRISSY SHIRT at: witch@nowagainrecords.com

2.tell us your preferred color, size and address. You have to send us all three!

3.we’ll email you back to tell you your total, and give you our Paypal address. Note: if you prefer to pay by credit card, you can, but we will have to process your card manually.

By Popular Demand: Chrissy Zebby Tembo’s “My Ancestors” On Now-Again Deluxe

You asked, so we’ll deliver – Chrissy Zebby Tembo’s My Ancestors up now via our subscription service, Now-Again Deluxe.

Ok – we did say that Chrissy Zebby Tembo’s Zamrock heater My Ancestors was to be a conjoined release with Shadoks. The simple jewel-case CD packaging should clearly demonstrate that this isn’t the normal release from the Now-Again catalog. But that doesn’t excuse the fact that the album isn’t available digitally – and, as there were no plans to make it available on Itunes or Emusic, we’ve set it up at Drip.fm. That works out just fine as our years-in-the-making anthology of sweet funk and soul, Loving On The Flip Side, has been pushed until September anyway!

If you haven’t already signed up already, then you’ll get this album, our exclusive Benny Soebardja digital EP and our Rhythm Machine album upon subscribing. And if you’ve yet to check out Zebby Tembo’s incredible Zamrock, download “Fisherman,” below.
