J.Rocc is the world-famous founder of Southern California’s legendary Beat Junkies DJ crew, DJ for the likes of the late J.Dilla, Black Star (Mos Def and Talib Kweli) and Madlib, and, as his releases on Now-Again – from his Cold Heat EP to his Kashmere Stage Band remix – have made clear, one funky producer to boot.

Following in the lineage of his series of now-classic megamix 12-inches on both Now-Again and Stones Throw, J.Rocc now tackles the privately-pressed albums found within the oddities contained in Sinecure Books’ Enjoy The Experience book. As per normal, knocking drums, quirky samples and a master’s touch abound on all three selections on this hard-hitting, fast-paced EP.

We will be offering this EP shortly via Now-Again Deluxe at Drip.fm. Regular vinyl versions are in stores now. A deluxe version of this EP – limited to 100 pieces – is now available at Sinecure Books’ webstore: each of these 100 deluxe packages will come with a unique vanity LP from the 60s or 70s, and will be packaged in an oversized, resealable plastic jacket.

Earlier this year, we announced the sale of Enjoy The Experience, on our sister company Sinecure Books. We also helped compile and produce a companion CD and LP anthology with the same name that we distributed alongside the book. It contains masterpieces by the likes of Stephen David Heitkotter (who will see a full-on Now-Again issued retrospective in 2014) and satellite Now-Again artists Dennis The Fox and Gary Wilson. Well, we’re happy to announce – and, ahem, remind you, if you’ve not taken the plunge – that the New York Times has included our Enjoy The Experience compendium in it’s annual holiday gift guide of notable box sets. Jon Caramanica writes:

“Nowadays, it’s easy to make a record at home and invite the world to listen. Five decades ago, the recording and the distribution were tougher, but people still felt the urge to be heard. Enjoy The Experience: Homemade Records 1958-1992 is the inaugural offering from Sinecure Books, the publishing company that Now-Again’s Egon co-founded with Johan Kugelberg. Packaged as a hardcover, and weighing in at 512 pages, it is the most comprehensive overview of the American “private press” movement from the latter half of the 20th Century that could possibly be assembled. We’re pleased to be distributing a 2CD/2LP anthology of psych, funk, folk, jazz, lounge, disco, boogie and just-plain-weirdness culled from the the book’s selections.

Take note: this is not a novelty freak show. Contained in this anthology are examples of some of the most highly regarded rock, soul, jazz, funk and singer/songwriter albums from the 60s through the early 80s. From the awkward-yet-talented to the genius-yet-bizarre, one thing unites all musicians presented here: they sincerely hoped to become stars, they committed themselves to record, and they left themselves vulnerable to an industry not understanding of nuance, not appreciative of character. While Enjoy The Experience the book details a forceful American cultural experience that stands in juxtaposition to the mainstream even as its creators attempted to infiltrate it, Enjoy The Experience the album shows the breadth of American creativity in a compelling, start-to-finish listen. Not all of it is easy to digest, but this music is essential to the 20th century American experience.
